5 Minute Warmups — February 11, 2023

One more recap of this exercise. We have 5 minutes to flip open a magazine at random and paint the first thing we see. In that limited time, we have to be judicious about how we begin and what we emphasize. For instance, Allison's Monet-like painting starts with color and style.

Brian goes for the shape and texture of the glass lamp bases.

Elaine sought out the structure of her subject from the dark, murky reference painting.

Greeta looked for the expression and facial geography of her subject.

Ken used shapes to model his subject.

And Sara replicated the soft colors and dreamy mood of her reference.

We're really getting good at this! Or more accurately, we're getting better at seeing the most important elements to capture the essence of our subject.

  1. When I first started doing these I was like all excited and slopping paint around willy nilly, but anymore I feel an inner peace. It will be whatever it is when its done and that sad old world will keep on turning.
