Alan Winter 2

Spent a little more time modifying the gas station sketch to get the feeling I wanted.

Painted my bi-annual self portrait on 8 1/2 X 11 cold press.

In case anyone is unsure about what the pods really look like:

  1. Yes, to both! I like the winter's eve feel to the gas station and the self portrait is great! Nice choice of background and the colors in the shirt are beautiful. You can just see you catching a glimpse of some score; very alive. And it feels like old, commissioned oil portraits where the background conveyed information about the sitter.

  2. Okay, just saw the pod references. I think your painting makes them look too shiny and reflective. These seem more matte. But everything else looks spot on.

  3. I'm thinking New Years Eve, picking up last minute chips for the party, and, what the hell, a handful of Slim Jims for yourself. Darker sky and the darker and deeper shadow under the green car lets us know that's the one you are driving, pulling out on the street while taking a big chaw of the Slim Jim. Nice white beard and like the colors you put on your shirt. And of course you crowned it all with your Tigers hat. I had thought of the pods as flat in front and back. This makes more sense.

  4. I like the hubcaps added to the cars. They give more definition to the black balls of tires. And the darkening of the sky. The scene is set for something mysterious to happen. That's the best portrait of a shirt I've ever seen. Who knew all that beige could look so becoming in a painting. A bar for beards, hmmm. You should do more portraits. Those pods are so weird. Like the Martians have landed. But you depicted those creepy tree branches overhead just perfectly. One thing I noticed in your painting of them, the fence is at an odd angle, not parallel to the front of the building. Just nitpicking here.

    1. Felt the same. Bother me every time I look at it.

  5. Really nice self portrait. I like the the atmosphere of the bar and your rapt attention to the game. Those pods are bizarre. Were they at least designed by someone famous?
