I don't think you necessarily want to lighten the background. In real life, I thought the leaves had more presence. They seem a bit blown out in the photograph. I'd have to see the actual in-person painting before presuming to offer an opinion. As for the flower head, I'm a fan already. The seeds and color palette are great. I can actually feel that it's at the end of the season, with a papery texture to the petals and the weight of the head making it droop over the stem.
Really like the size, the movement and color in the second one. The first one has a whimsical quality about it with those little blossoms like stars in the nights. And the sunflower leaves make up the big star. It reminds me of a children’s book illustration— and I mean that as a compliment …
