The baguette is finished and I'm calling it a success. I tried painting some new-to-me shiny surfaces and I commemorated a moment. Sure, I see some problems, primarily with the placement of the butter dish and the way the crust curves on the bottom right. And I wish I'd used some more colorful plates—but who thinks about the plate when they're about to dig into a delicious baguette? Basically, I'm happy—both with the painting and with the beginnings of my baguette-making adventure.

Delicious! Believe me when I tell you that I am a bread lover. The crust and crumb are totally correct and the crust often turns in like that. Nice shine on the dish too.
ReplyDeleteLooks good enough to eat! The shading on the bread is just right, as well as on the plate. It’s hard to get the shading subtle enough to indicate the depression in the center of the plate, but this is just perfect. And that little shine….
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the chef, doubtless wearing one of those goofy hats, just slid it to you on the plate with a confident smile.
ReplyDeleteI would maybe add a little more color to he background behind the plate.
The baguette is great but the reflections in the plate steal the show. The butter is a off, should be in the front of the bagel melting into it.
Was this painring something you were planning, or did it just occur to you when you saw it on the table?
I wasn't planning it at all, but then I started it and then I started liking it and adding bits (like the butter and the knife). It's a cautionary tale about using decent paper, even if you think it's just a rough study. It just might work out better than you expect.
DeleteThat is the absolute best portrait of a plate I have ever seen. And the bread looks pretty good to resting upon it.
