We often park in front of this house on Menomonee. Very welcoming entrance. A lot went wrong, so I treated it as a recovery process. The girl is from a FB screenshot of a friend’s granddaughter. Why didn’t I just bury the entire hand in the dog’s fur? Too involved in being true to the reference pic.

The hand is fine—it says a lot about the relationship. Also, if you buried it, you'd regret that it made her look like she's wearing a mitten or something. It's lovely as is! And that is a welcoming entrance. I like the way you made it even more so by leading us around the tree and developing depth. The details on those houses are great!
ReplyDeleteI like the first one better, but I think I would like it better if the hair was lightened and mottled a bit to be in tune with the rest of the painting. In the second I would like to see more of that mottled dark in the lower right to match the upper right.
ReplyDeleteTook your advice on the shrubbery but left the girl alone. Not easy, as u know, to go in and add light to the dark. Sent it off to her grandmother who loves it.
DeleteNot so strangely, I totally disagree with Ken on the portrait. I love the sweep of her hair and the solidness of that form. It just sets off the softness of girl and dog’s features. And they’re framed by the hair and the solid doorway molding behind them. It’s a lovely painting.
