Three souvenirs of my trip to Arizona— 8 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5, and 9 x 12. I did these from photos after I got back home. Actually I combined elements from several photos, trying to develop interesting compositions. Not sure I succeeded, but I did capture those Southwestern colors to a certain extent….Also, I did give the portrait of my niece to her and she seemed happy with it. At least she displayed while I was there!

Prickly subjects…

You absolutely got the colors of the Southwest and the feel of the light there. The compositions are interesting, too. I especially like the first and third ones. They make me want to squint against the bright sun. Love them! And of course your niece loved that painting. It's such a lovely little portrait--so sensitively done.
ReplyDeleteI do love the colors too! It’s good that your backgrounds are loose allowing you to focus on the main items of interest while having a clear understanding of place.
ReplyDeleteI like the unconventional portrait composition too. It provides a real sense of person that you won’t find in conventional portrait. Good for you. The little halo is a very nice touch.
I like the big bright guy in the first one, but he looks wilting in the second, almost like a man in a cactus suit, and the third is a little crowded, like we have only a couple hours to see the Sonoran desert. Time moves slowly in dry places, plenty of time to examine the cacti by themselves.
ReplyDeleteThose sure aren't your Chicago backyard colors. Southwestern all the way. I luv the first one. So strong and dynamic. Everything about it is perfect, don't you think? And the gift of the pink flower with the light mauve shadow on the 2nd painting. The intensity of light and colors of the 3rd painting. Except maybe where it gets a little too complicated on the right lower bottom. The portrait is wonderful in a quiet, touching, yet powerful way.
