Alan Winter 11

I’ve wanted to paint my neighbor’s grape plants for awhile now. I used the negative painting technique on coldpress. I might do a little more work on the grapes themselves trying to get a little more color in them—-or not.

I tried copying an old master for the class we’re taking in Biloxi. It’s alright. Hard to copy an oil painting

I’m trying to do a better painting of the great Live Oak in my front yard. So far, all plein aire on Yupo. Just beginning.

  1. I'm not sure about more color in the grapes. I like the subtle color you have, but maybe just a tad more shading—just enough to make the individual grapes stand apart? The graphic quality of the live oak is great. Those branches fill the space so well. And you're right about it being hard to copy an oil painting in watercolor!

  2. I want more color on the grapes, maybe some glistening drops of dew. I think the hulls of those boats are too damn dark. I like the tree, kind of fanciful but nothing wrong with that. The tree seems to realize that it is in a rectangular frame and is ably trying to fill it in.

    1. The shape of the tree dictated the orientation of the painting.

    2. I don't mean that YOU deliberately filled in the rectangle, though I don't think there would be anything wrong with doing it, it is just the way live oaks grow.

  3. The grape painting is pretty great as is. I like the subtle tones against the dark background. Nice work on the old master, especially the water. Love those branches just filling the frame — a good start.

  4. The grape painting looks like a great painting with all the attention paid to the so-called background. A little more attention to the grapes (but not too much) would be a fine addition and also help to wrestle that dark shape to the left back into place.
You did a good job in rendering an oil painting into watercolor. Maybe just lightening that one black black boat with a wee bit of light and/or color would just do it.
Well it looks like a great beginning on the oak tree. Although I liked the previous one too.
