Alan Fall 11

Still sketching. Maybe an actual painting will come out of this. But, if not, my sketchbooks are more interesting.

Took a lot of opaque colors out of this one.

This is a place In Biloxi at the Orr Museum called Pleasant’s House. It’s a standalone building that shows how people lived on the coast in the 1800’s.

This is an Italian coastal town that showed up as a screenshot on my desktop. I thought that it would be fun to sketch and it was. The sea was discouraging because I couldn’t get a smooth deep color like I wanted.  When the sea ran into the town it got messy.

  1. It seems that in last week's sketches the ink and watercolor were equals but now the ink has gotten the upper hand. I wonder what it would look like if you did the painting first and then put in the ink over it.

  2. These all look better large than as tiny blog images. I especially like the White House and the abstract nature of the foreground and trees. The seaside town is a bit pastelly for my taste — needs more earthy colors imo. But I like what you’ve done with the water and clouds. All those tiny windows would drive me nuts….oh, and the orange painting one needs more tree branches. I like that horizontal one.

  3. How big are these sketches? I think my opinion would be different if they were 4x5 vs. 9x12. I like the first two alot, especially the colors on the first one and the way the tree frames the house on the second. I'd add more branches to the first one for balance. There's a whimsy about the last one that I like, but I'm not sure about details like the windows. I do like the background elements.

    1. The red lighthouse is 4 X 4. The last two are 5 X 7. I’ll think about the branches.

  4. I wonder if lightening up some of the opaqueness of the red house painting disturbed the overall balance. Somehow it looks different to me now, like the ink lines are both more dominate and more scattered. The white house with abstracted tree is really interesting compositionally along with the color placement. Yeah, I have some trouble with the costal town. It almost looks like a satirical comment with the cartoon-like buildings against the calmness of nature.

  5. OK. What I liked about the reference photo was the colorful buildings. They are those colors. A couple of times I might have given them more value but that’s what they are.
I sketched this in about 30-40 minutes and tried to be loose when adding colors. If I were to make a painting out of this I would make some changes, but this is just a quick sketch.

    1. Maybe it's the repetition of all the black rectangular windows that seem so exacting compared to the softness of the way all those colors and values are painted?
