Four Chefs & One Dishwasher

Today's painting is a Foursome of Women happily preparing for lunch in my friend's kitchen in Manila, one February morning after breakfast. My husband took the kitchen snapshot with a bonus of the mirror reflection of another husband quietly

washing the breakfast dishes. To immortalize early  presidential voting of pandemic 2020, I included the statement of "I voted" in 10 languages in the background as if the guy in the mirror voted already! The pencil sketch of this scenario was done on September 21,  2020. I hope this painting conveyed the warmth of women bonding at the kitchen & also a reminder to vote early!

  1. What a joyful painting! I voted, so I can comment on it! I like how you treated each lady and piece of fruit individually, but not overly specific. They all look happy and busy — I can almost hear the chatter among them. And what is that giant fruit the lady in the blue dress is about to cut? I see that in the grocery store but have no idea wha it is. The guy in the back could be watching Tv, so it’s good you included him in the title....The epitome of a happy painting!

  2. Love it! It's exactly the kind of kitchen scene you see in any culture where women gather to chat and prepare the feast. It's familiar to everyone, but something we miss nowadays. Love the colors; love your portrait skills, and love the addition of the guy. Makes it seem like there's a whole other connected party going one.

    And I voted, too!

  3. Alright, everyone's a good citizen. Let's hope it makes a difference. You really captured the individual expression of each person and I luv the guy through the window in the other room. Looks like a vegetarian feast. thing!

  4. I enjoyed including the guy in the mirror because his addition posted alternative reality to the domestic scenery: like watching TV or inserting his ballot in the election machine or actually washing the dishes silently while the 4 women continued talking. The jackfruit belongs to the fig or breadfruit family. Inside are multiple seeds covered with fleshy gelatinous texture. The seeds are eaten after they are boiled or roasted like chestnuts. The textured covers when eaten raw taste like mango or pineapple & when cooked are excellent as a vegetarian spicy dish with coconut milk! Jackfruit is loaded with vitamins & lowers glucose levels! Thanks for chatting with my kitchen ladies, my fellow artists! Missing all of you big time! Elaine T. please get well soon!

  5. I think you did a good job of making them all equal and interacting, and not an easy task. The leftward three are looking at the camera but the one on the right is sticking to her job with that big fruit which I guess is the jackfruit. This is the one that you painted from the black and white photo right? Did you still use the same colors as in the colored photo?

I think you guys are generous about the motivations of the guy. Personally I think he is watching the big game. His loss though. I remember when I worked at the Chinese restaurant and the snow peas arrived. They put them in a big bowl and everybody gathered around and pulled out the little strings, including me, even though I was only the bartender. Best conversations ever!
