Paint and more paint…

The top one was just a study in using complementary colors and brushstrokes to create drama.i think it worked! The second painting is another save. You might remember it had a bar down the middle that I managed to remove and paint over.

Did it improve the painting ? I’m not sure, but I feel I don’t need the window frame anymore. Maybe those trees in the back should a different color….maybe I’ll do another version of this. #3 painting turned out ok, but I really need practice painting large washes of color if I’m going to paint landscapes like this. As landscapes go, it’s serene but kind of boring.
Enjoy your feast on Thursday and say a word of thanks for our great little watercolor community!

  1. The brushwork and color on the first painting is absolutely kinetic. I can't believe you managed to lift the entire center bar! It seems to have unified the two sides in terms of color--and adding those trees eliminated the triangle problem. Good call. Now, though, I'm not sure about purpose of the angled frame. The third landscape is definitely serene, but not boring at all. I think the sunlight and shadows are beautiful. The large washes of green have just the right amount of texture, and the tree shadow on the bottom sunny green patch just make it!

  2. I don’t know why but the original holds more interest for me. I think that if you had just put in that third green tree to the left of the ot the other two you’d have fixed the issue.
Also, and again I don’t know why, but the pond looks like a tidal wave to me. But I do love the choice of colors and values.
I liked the window frame and the tilt. Made me think.

  3. Good solution ditching the window frame.

  4. I do enjoy your flaming plant! Removing the center pane and adding that bit of tree really helped that bad roof angle (although I still see it but not so glaringly). The crooked frame is odd, but maybe in a good way. That too dark roof is bothersome though. The landscape is intriguing, almost surreal. Your got some weirdness going in your paintings, Sara. It's subtle, maybe, but it's cool.

  5. I like the fiery plant in the cool and peaceful blue pot.

I marvel at the way you covered up that center bar, but I have to wonder why. Why not just do a new painting from the old image? Paper is not that epensive.

Looks to me too like the waterline looks too high for the horizon. I think it's the way those trees in the back the way the water curves up to meet them, and maybe they should look more distant from the foreground trees.

    1. I like the challenge of altering a painting, especially a watercolor….i don’t know why, but it’s very satisfying. I think it helps me ignore the source material and see the painting as a painting on its own.
