November 2, 2024 — Elaine O.

I'm still trying to raise my "glass" game with these marbles. I used to love marbles as a kid...not playing any actual game, just looking at them and holding them. I'd have loved these!

approx. 7" x 5"

It's no secret that I love shadows on architecture! Here, I love the sunlight hitting the spires at the top and the shaft that catches the right side of the back building, leading to the awning in the foreground. I just wasn't sure how it would translate into a painting (too dark? too much background? not enough center of interest?). So I did a quick value/color study to test. I think I need to go even darker at the bottom left and the right building to keep that diagonal stroke of interest. But I think it's worth pursuing.

  1. None of my business of course but I think you should get rid of that awning. It doesn't do anything for the composition, and the viewer is wondering what is that thing and pausing to figure that out instead of looking up and out to where the towers pierce the sky.

Love the marbles. Reminds me of those honesty plants. I am a big bigger is better, less isn't more it's less, guy. But here I can see that I am wrong, wrong, wrong.

  2. The marbles are fascinating, a world of their own. The building is a good study and I look forward to seeing where it takes you.

  3. Love the marbles. The shapes, color transitions and shadows are fabulous. Now I’m wishing I had some marbles. One afternoon I painted glass objects in my house. It was totally fascinating and I got one IMO great piece from it…although on awful cheap paper.

  4. I like the architectural piece. I might have the awning hang more vertically. But I think you should follow your heart on this. Do more glass and inspire me to do some too.

  5. The marbles are fascinating to look at! The building study lacks something imo. Contrast? Detail? It just doesn’t hold.my attention like your other architectural paintings. But it’s late, and I’m kind of crabby I guess….
