Out the window…
The top one is a study. It might do a bigger version. Not sure what bugs me about it but something does. Maybe too many tchotchkes…I’m thinking the second one is finished. I added that building trim because I had a paint blotch I couldn’t remove, but it might too dark….#3 looks like two different paintings to me, not sure how to unify it….fyi the painting is not crooked in the photo of 3, the window is crooked in the composition…on purpose…

As I recall those shelves on the right were really dark, you could just make out their edges in the gloom which I liked, but then I like the current painting also.
ReplyDeleteYou have to move that house to the right so that the front shows in the right pane. The way it is now only the roof is showing in the right pane which then looks like it is parallel to the pane and not part of the house on the left.
I don't know what bothers you about that first one. I think it's a fine study. On the reference, the tchotchkes were all kind of united in the dark mass and only the light edges call them out. Maybe that's it--maybe they're too "separate" and not too "many?" On the other hand, I like the way the light plays on them and the way the colors mirror the view outside. I guess I don't really know after all. That second one is definitely finished--I like it! Ken makes a good point about the last one--even opening a small triangle of light under the eaves on the right side would help make the house span both panes. Also, bringing some of the more vibrant color from the right over to the left pane.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think that there are too many tchotchkes (or chotchkees as we said in Michigan) other than that coffee maker or bread machine in the middle. But maybe that’s your memory. I liked the colors and textures and thought it made a kind of buffer between the brightness of the outside world and the duskiness of the inside.
ReplyDeleteOn the last one—I thought it was two separate paintings. Now I see that they are one, but I see lighter values on the left and darker on the right and that led to my confusion.
The last one does look like 2 different paintings. I think one thing that divides it is that dark blue line down the middle. If you lightened up to match the rest of the window frame, I think if would help. As well as what others have said about distributing the dark and lights across the page. Certainly expanding the angle of the dark roof so that some of the yellow goes into the right side. Doesn't it look a little off anyway? In term of the top painting. Just wondering about the right side of the window pane. Is it in shadow? I think if would help if it was the same lightness as the left side...
ReplyDeleteOn the first one, Wondering about that stool(?) under window. It adds nothing, actually distracts…maybe move one of the pots or vases into that space. Third one …maybe have some crosssover in the trees… orange trees in the left pane too.
