Alan Fall 7

Cleaned up the green cottage in Mississippi by smoothing out the dark green blotches in the trees. They were too harsh.

Finished this little urban sketch taken from the top of the Illinois Masonic parking garage. Pen and ink followed by watercolor washes on cold press. I kinda liked it even though it turned out differently than I first thought.

Here is a quick sketch from my front porch at the height of autumn. On hot press 5 x 5. I’ll add more value to the colors.

I saw this view on the lakefront. Something about the starkness appealed to me. 5 x 10 on hot press. We’ll see what happens.

  1. Yes, that cabin is finished. Nothing to add or subtract there. I like the composition of the parking lot roof cityscape. That big sky just makes it. That blue car (great job on that, by the way!) outshines the colors of the autumn foliage--not an easy task! I'll wait to see the additions next week. That last one looks very promising. I already love the composition and the simplicity of the scene.

    1. Thanks for your comment about the sky. I had a little internal debate about how much sky and went with how I cropped it.

  2. I like the big sky and the confident buildings, but those trees are a little weak. I would prefer that the roofline not be visible through them even if it was that way in real life.

And I like the front yard and the royal(?) blue automobile.

Are those trees masked because you expect them to be covered in snow come the week after Thanksgiving?

  3. Gotta say, I’m not a fan of the white pen on #1. Maybe a blue or green wash would make them less obvious. Otherwise it’s a beautiful painting and has that Southern feel…I do like the pen work on the trees in #2 and I love the transparency of the leaves.that ethereal feeling is a nice balance to the solidity of the buildings. I like the big sky too. That little 5x5 has a lot going on with color and cars and trees etc but it all works. How can you draw so small and still see what you’re doing? I like the pen work on that too. The last one looks promising.

  4. I thought when you covered up some of the white gel pen on the trees with green paint on the first painting, it looked more integrated. Now that you've lightened or removed the green, it shows up more. That white scribble seems to be the first thing I notice as it skips across the page. I think the painting would look great without that distraction. The big sky works in the 2nd painting and the scribbled trees are fine, such a tiny part of it all. Since the scribbling is overall in the 3rd ptg. and its more fragmentedly (is that a word?) painted, it all holds together well. The finally painting already looks good.
