Alan Fall 6

Finished this Yupo painting after many corrections. Finally got it the way I envisioned it after a Yupo dance. The little shimmer is light dancing off the fixative.

Can’t think of anything more to do with this 12 X 14 on Arches Rough. Use of many watercolor painting techniques are visible in this work (wet on wet, dry on dry, and combination).  I might look to find some way to soften the dark edges of leaf groups in the top half.

This Yupo is a combination of a drab but compositionaly strong observational photo and the Monet library on the internet. Yet to spray on fixative which will add a little value to the colors.

Had a half hour before showtime so I started this little urban scene looking out at the city from a parking lot rooftop. 5 X 8 on coldpress. Just got the basic structure  in and did first wash. I used a Tombow pen and it really bled too much.  I’ll either fix that by scrubbing (hard to do with ink) or just use the effect to my own advantage.

  1. I'm really liking these recent landscape/cityscapes. You've got the lake reflecting the feeling of your reference. The building with the tree branch is lovely. The values are great and that branch is beautiful. You've got that same thing going in the Monet bridge painting--the values and colors work so well. That last cityscape is a little gem just as it is.

  2. All very strong, but the Monet bridge stands out for its contrast of the well defined bridge against the moody watercolory background. Also great start on the cityscape.

  3. It looks like a shining city on the shimmery bank of the river.

I like the house and the squiggly lines in the foliage, but that branch, which I swear I have seen before looks like it is defying gravity. I know it is from a burly tree off the right and closer to it, but still I'd like to see a bit of that hefty trunk before I will walk under it.

That bridge is a barnburner. Oh I just love those trees so much that I have pulled out my envelope of little yupo sheets and am stroking my beard even as I speak.

    1. You are obviously not acquainted with live oaks. This wouldn’t bother a soul in the south. I already told you that you have seen that branch before. It’s hard to paint that house without it. You’ll see even longer branches on previous blogposts.

  4. They all look great and your work on them since last Saturday really shows!
