Awhile ago I copied a portrait from Watercolor Addicts on Facebook. The artist is Luan Quach and I really admire his limited palette and bold strokes. Here is my copy.
I decided to use black and white photos and try to emulate what he does so well. I’m not there yet and may never get there but for the time being this has me doing one a day.

Greeta, these are lovely! I love that first one. It's soft and minimal but defines all the relevant planes of the face. And the color and vignetting are masterful. Great idea working from B&W. It doesn't matter what color you add, but you can see the shapes of the faces so well. Especially fine is the last woman. The colors are bolder and I love the highlights on her lips.
ReplyDeleteThat first painting is outstanding. It looks so spontaneous, like you meditated on it for awhile and then knocked it out in a fifteen minute flurry of brushes. I like the guy best in the other paintings, the women not so much. I think I'd like them better if you had kept the white of the photos. And the top woman, I'd like to see her dark shadow.
ReplyDeleteThe portrait paintings feel lighter and just enough! Nice!
ReplyDeleteYour style is much more intense and colorful than his. The top one is nice and watercolory, but the last three have presence and weight to them. They have an intensity that is compelling.
