Elaine O. — June 10, 2023

This is St. Gregory the Great church in Chicago. If you're a follower of our blog, you already know what an architectural jewel this is. Here, I concentrated on a small detail in the sanctuary but couldn't help catching a lot of other elements and textures in the background, so I kept them less defined. I like the composition and the candle; I even like the intricately carved woodwork—and you know how I struggle with browns!

It was good to be back with everyone and meet a new crop of beginners. It's going to be a good season!

  1. Oh this is splendid Elaine. It is the way I remember the church with its big expanses of unadornment girded by intricate design. Love that blue hangy thing. I am a little confused about that arch shape with the red and blue cross. Is it a part of what's behind it, or is it a stand alone separate thing.?

    1. Yes, it's a stand alone. It's a little redder wood, but if I did this again, I might skip it. It cuts into the perspective a little oddly.

  3. I would like to share a little history on the arch object with the red & blue cross. A long time ago, during the time of pastor emeritus, Fr. Paul, there was a young couple who were active @ St. Greg. The wife who was pregnant at that time, used to work out of town, occasionally. On one of these out of town assignments, the pregnant wife got sick , died & also lost the unborn babies. To honor his dear wife & Ithe lost babies, the bereaved husband donated the arch shape panel which holds or stores the cross the altar servers carry to the altar at the start of every mass. The arch panel used to be prominently located at the left side of the altar in the earlier years. It is a Sad Story! Or the husband might have donated the choir loft near the altar to honor his lost family. Either way, the arch panel or the choir lost was donated in memory of a loved one!
