Still working….

Still working on this12x16 on hot press. Right now the tulips and window scene overshadow her, but I’m going  to darken the interior background and her clothes, hoping that her face will then pop. I don’t really want to mess too much more with her face, but I will darken her hair. Hot press is tricky…you can’t really lift color but you can layer like crazy. Of course I’m not really a layer painter, but I guess you’re never too old to develop patience….

  1. Hmm... interesting. Yes, the bright colors of the flowers and window do push Nora into the background. It almost looks like they belong in two different paintings. Darkening the background should make her face pop. And if that's not enough, you can desaturate and darken the flowers and window. Or (and I hope Pat doesn't read this!) you can crop out the parts that aren't Nora!

    1. Do I hear snip, snip in your suggestion?

    2. Yes, you hear correctly. Nora is so beautifully painted she can stand on her own if the flowers don't work out.

  2. I agree with Elaine. I would also put more detail (whether it exists in the photo or not) into the flowers so that they look they belong in the same painting.

  3. I think that your instincts are correct. You can also wash out the bouquet a bit and I would not take putting a little color in her face off the table.
