It's finished! You know how I've mentioned sometimes being reluctant to remove the mask at the end, afraid I'll ruin things? Here's my dilemma, illustrated. This is the "finished work" just before I removed the masking fluid....

9" x 12"        Finished, except for mask removal

...and after. Quite a different vibe, isn't it?

9" x 12"        Finished painting

Actually, since the intention was always to include the white drawing lines, I can't really describe the removal as a dilemma. It's more like a surprise.

I'm planning to do this again, but larger and with more careful perspective.

  1. Was trying to pick out Marina City of course, (that one between those two taller buildings in the center with the nob on top?) and noticed how the buildings were all jiggly and then how the fauna is a little like that too. I can see setting the whole thing to music,

  2. I kinda liked some of the unmasked lines better when they were muted like the path along the lake and the arboretum. I think that this is a great idea and can imagine many different vistas for it.

  3. Definitely gives it more punch. I would darken the sky behind the buildings so the mask is more evident. Otherwise I like the mask in the greenery. It’s not totally obtrusive but it does add a vibrancy or movement. It reminds me of a childrens book illustration. I read a lot of childrens picture books these days and I’m amazed at the variety and ingenuity of the illustrations—a great source for ideas for different styles.
