Tiny setback storefront was once a photography studio then a radio/TV station and now a dispensary although Mississippi does not allow the full strength stuff. I hate doing lettering. Forgot that I had “fixed” the white sign with gouache, I ran a wet brush over it to deaden the white. Can’t do that with gouache. 🙄

Excuse me
I just posted Saturday and I should probably only post weekly but I finished this this morning and I am posting this now. Surprised that a granulating earth color like indigo played so well with one-note and bright cadmium red. Or should I say a crusty old guy and a loud bratty teenager.

I had two pages left in my Ocean Springs so I sketched the place where we had watercolor classes and a different version of the aloe plant in the backyard of our VRBO house.

It’s Not A Grocery
It’s the Government Street Grocery, a bar and restaurant featuring local bands. It opened in the aftermath of Katrina but it has a vibe that makes you think it’s been around forever.

The protozoa
On those 9x12's I started at one point on the paper and then expanded it outward until I thought it was done, but I don't think I have the oomph to be able to fill in an 18x24 so in this one I started with six entry points and am moving outward from them.

Last year I did a quick and loose Yupo sketch of my hometown of Muskegon. I liked it and some of you did too.

But I’ve been thinking lately about finishing my work and trying to make it as good as I could. So I painted a larger version on Arches 140# coldpress. Although there are a few dozen errors in it I’m trying to more fully finish this work. This is where I am now and I may be done. If I find other things to do I’ll do them, but Ken will put them under a microscope and declare that he can’t see the difference. It will be tiny things. Here’s the new version.
A lot of fun and a lot of work. I thought that I would be more accurate with the buildings in the background and looser with the flora in the foreground but it didn’t work out that way. I had to spend as much time on each item whether it was brick and mortar or leaves and flowers.
