Alan Winter 9-2026

 Prep for Stir-fry.

This is on an 11 X 14 sheet of Yupo. Done alla prima.

Back to my little exercises.

Winter coat.

An open box with the contents still inside. Pen and ink with watercolor.

A freshly made bed.

A salted sidewalk.

These are all done in a 5 X 7 140# coldpress sketchbook.

  1. Nice work! Your colors are all so bright and clean! No mud anywhere…great textures and patterns too.

  2. The vegetables look so crisp and healthy. I'm a little confused about the background; it seems to be basically a vignette, but then, there's the shadow. And why is it lighter than the background? However, it doesn't bother me enough to interfere with my enjoyment of the subject. I am liking your series of prompt sketches, especially the ornaments and the salted sidewalk. So nicely done.

  3. The thing about canned lighting is that you get light sources from several different directions. Everything beneath the oval of the bowl is shadow. The middle shadow is dark and there are two lighter shadows on each side of the middle one because of the different lighting. I fought against the impulse to make the dark shadow the bottom of the bowl. It’s also why the shape is a little off kilter.
