I decided to make a painting out of last week's sketch. Here, it's in its "teen years," when everything seems awkward and slightly "off." In particular, I'm missing the energy of the sketch. But I guess we'll carry on and see where we end up.

It is quite sunny. If I wasn't wearing a hat I would have my hand over my eyes. For some reason I am getting an L A vibe. I would like to see that guard become a guy wearing an ice cream suit. It has the story telling appeal of Hopper.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it doesn’t have the energy of the sketch but it’s morphing into something else. The building is really the focus now - really nicely painted, but yes, the sense of place leans toward David Hockney’s California paintings…
ReplyDeleteA nicer painting to be sure but I keep going back and forth between it and the sketch. I think that you can still achieve the energy you (and I) want by treating this version as a wash and then just going crazy.
