About three-quarters finished with this still life. I've been layering away and it's getting better (I think). At any rate, I'm happier with it than I was. I'm enjoying still life much more than I expected to. And it's good for me—I go to the fruit store, find something attractive, buy it, paint it and eat it. As you can see, I'm in no danger of getting scurvy!

Before starting, I did a rough color test (below—but ignore the blue smears at the top). Is it just me or do you sometimes find there's more energy and life in your quick sketches than in your carefully painted final?

It’s not just you. Happens to me all the time. The cloth looks great as do the doomed fruit. A little more work on the honey pot and it will be almost as good as your rough draft.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe some hints of color on the back wall.
ReplyDeleteI like the subtlety of those off-white tiles in the back. Or maybe you can have a note taped on it, or a splash of crud. Oh, maybe a bee buzzing around. Don't forget the counter edge off to the right side. Oh, and a nice sharp knife, maybe. The sketch of course, is magnificent.
ReplyDeleteGreat job with the cloth, especially with that unforgiving phthalo blue. Right now the honey pot is looking like the party pooper. Sketch is nice, honey pot appears to be with the dance.
ReplyDeleteThe energy of the sketch is great. But I love that cloth in the big one, especially that little ridge in The multicolored part….
