January 3, 2026 — Elaine O.

What better way to start the new year than with a painting of the Art Institute, particularly the Ando Gallery? I wanted to make it contemplative and serene—just the way I experienced the room—so I kept the colors and value shifts subtle.

Next week, it's back to normal, noisier life.

  1. Something eerie, or I should say otherworldly, about that gallery off the beaten bath. And your presentation is austere. Like the way the shadows dance on the wall behind, but that rounded grey thing on the left, I would have left if out.

  2. You got a lot of mileage out of what looks like two colors — maybe pthalo blue and rawsienna? I like the way you gave color and shape to the vessels, especially the two on the right. Maybe shadows behind the vessel would add a little more mystery?

    1. Yes, two colors—ultramarine blue and transparent red oxide. IRL, the vases are very uniformly lit, but I agree there should be some kind of shadow action going on.

  3. Did you see the Bruce Goff exhibit? I’m hoping to go on Friday. I’ll have to seek out the Ando gallery….

    1. Not yet, but I am planning to see it. I usually time my visit to the Ando Gallery about halfway through. It's restorative to just sit there for a few minutes and you leave refreshed and ready for the rest of your museum day.
