My teacher in the portrait class had some “nevers” which he shared in a joking way…..but he was really serious. Never pick a subject showing teeth. Smiles in general not good unless they express pure joy. Never paint your family. And weirdest of all…don’t worry about whether your painting looks like the subject. Say what?. My grandson and his father from a few years ago.

Hahaha! I only paint portraits of my family! Not really interested in strangers! I agree with the smile rule…your skin tones are wonderful here and I can see a family resemblance between them. Yeah, and what’s the point if you can’t get a resemblance to the subject? I guess it works if you’re only painting strangers….
ReplyDeleteOkay, about those "nevers"....I totally agree with the teeth prohibition. Teeth are hard and often look cheesy and amateurish. Don't paint family? What better subject? As to likeness, why else paint a portrait? I think you don't need photorealism, but it has to feel like the person or it's not a portrait, is it? As for yours....I like it. The color palette is great and I recognize your grandson (from previous portraits). It has the feel of a very elevated photo booth and that's intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI like the colors of the sweatshirts and curtain. They look like they are about to receive an award. And of course I like the cat with the curled tail wearing some kind of blue cat sweater.
