Two croppings

Took seven croppings from the image of  the last tree I did and was not happy about.  These are the first two.  Both 5x7.

A little gaudy

A little ascetic

  1. I like the color and texture of the tree bark in #1, but the ends of the branches need more definition. In #2, that first tree to the left could be paler or lighter or bathed in mist, ie,pushed more into the background.

  2. Use that Yupo! The bark on the first tree is great. I agree that you can add a network of fine branch ends among the leaves. The atmosphere in the second painting is incredible. There's a great mood that feels like there's a story here. I agree with Sara about background layers. You have a very prominent tree and some very distant trees in the fog. The secondary tree should be pushed between those two. Right now, it's too close to the foreground, if that makes sense. But whatever you do, don't lose that eerie misty atmosphere!

  3. Very interesting. The second painting looked more colorful or brighter in class. They both have an eerie quality to them.

  4. I agree about the network of finer branches if you are indeed trying to paint a tree. Are those brushstrokes I see?
