Alan Fall 25-4

11 1/2 X 14 on Yupo. Apples in pottery bowl in front of Ice Bucket. The composition is from Greeta. I thought it would make a good Yupo piece. It was a lot of effort because the background washes didn’t work. I finally just scrubbed the background out in preparation to try it again. As I was trying to think of what to do next, I just gave it another look and thought “Well hell….. I like this.”  So I just cleaned it up a bit and left it alone.

Garlic bulb on a spoon rest on top of an electric stovetop. I don’t know what the hell happened here. I had an idea that just didn’t work to the point where I wondered what I was thinking in the first place. The reference photo looked good but I used a polypropylene medium that didn’t work as well as Yupo and stained more deeply so I couldn’t just wipe the color off.  I had to put the white back in with white crayon, white acrylic, gesso and Chinese white. Maybe the whole premise was off. Here’s the reference photo.

And here’s my take.

It’s amazing to me how badly I can paint. And I really spent some time and effort on this. Well I did like the circles.

  1. I really like both of these paintings.the colors are so luscious in the bowl of apples and I like that little reflection in the ice bucket. The stark background sets the whole composition so well. And the garlic bulb may not be what you wanted but it’s a great painting. The garlic is nicely rendered in those soft colors and the wild background just sets it off.the textures and colors are a nice foil for the whiteness of the spoon rest and garlic. And the circles add a little mystery. I’d frame and hang this in my kitchen…

  2. These are both really good. I like the contrast between the vivid fruit colors and the sparkling silver grouping against the soft neutral background. And I don't know what you're talking about—I really like the second one. The garlic and ceramic are beautiful and the background is really luscious. It has the feel of the Art Institute's painting of the Arthurian Elaine on a boat floating down some river. It also feels like Magritte and Dali--what am I seeing and why do they go together? Yet they do! The reflections in the water and the textured shadow and the little red accent in the bubble—I like everything about this! You need to step away and look again.

    1. Thanks so much for your kind words. I did really like the apples but I guess I didn’t see the value of the garlic painting although I did like the garlic and spoon rest themselves. But I wasn’t sure about the stovetop.
