Well, since it was unhealthy to go outside and breathe today, I finally found some time to finish this small painting I started a million weeks ago. Ok, maybe it looks more like Henry Kissinger than Joe, but overall I’m pretty pleased with it. I like the sense of light I was able to achieve. I also like the hassock, although those pencil lines are the crop marks for the frame, so it won’t be quite as prominent.

Before I forget….if you have access to Prime, Amazon’s streaming service, you know that they have about 10 seasons worth of Portrait Artist and Landscape Artist of the year available. But they also have a series called Artist of the Year: Masterclass, which is about 40 short episodes on painting portraits and landscapes in various mediums taught by former Portrait and Landscape winners. Of course there’s only 2 watercolor episodes, which are so-so, but I find it interesting to see how different artists paint and approach painting. And sometimes there’s just nothing else to watch….
ReplyDeleteI can see why you're so pleased with it! First of all, he looks more like Joe than Kissinger, so you're good there. I love that spill of light from the window. Love the hassock. Love the piping on the robe and the glint on his glasses. Love the color path from the robe to the cup. And even more than the compositional and technical skill, there's the story. I keep looking to see what's happening. What's on that tablet that beats the view out the window? Is he convalescing? Is it the quiet of the morning and he's trying not to disturb the rest of the household? His story intrigues me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on Sky Arts. Thoroughly enjoying these videos. They are also on YouTube.
ReplyDeleteGreat work. It’s like all the work you’ve been putting in over the last year comes to fruition in this personal lovely painting.
Obviously he is doing the Wordle. He only has two turns left and he has put his cup of coffee on the side table so as to concentrate more. Sarah will be entering the room in a minute and she will throw open the window and say "Smell the roses Joe." And he will realize that she is right and will toss the tablet and go into the spring-kissed morning garden. Stupid Wordle.
ReplyDeleteElaine is right it is all about the light streaming through the roses into the room.
Maybe his mouth is just a tad to red, and haven't we seen that chair before, like in a hallway on the second floor?
The retired gentleman wearing his blue velvet robe. Love this composition.
ReplyDeleteEvery picture tells a story, don't it? Your interiors with a view are looking good, Sara.
