It's been a while but it certainly did feel good to be back painting. I'm calling this still life finished. More bad sizing surprises but they're mostly around the edges, so it's croppable. I'm not sure I totally succeeded at the crystal bowl, but there are things I like. And, for some reason, the peacock feather amuses me. Actually, upon reflection, I might go back and nestle those lemons in the bowl a little more.

And, with a little time to kill, I played with my watercolor pencils in my sketchbook. I used three colors and all kinds of techniques on this little orange, and I like it a lot better after stepping away for a day.

Interesting observation, though—What's my sudden fascination with citrus fruits and warm colors? I also have a bag of key limes at hand. I already used one bag to make a key lime pie. It was delicious, but now I wish I'd painted it before eating it.
You did a good job of making that transparent 'hook' look substantial enough to hold those oranges, who have a very solid golden presence.
ReplyDeleteBut not as solid as that carved up cutie. I remember watercolor pencils as having very, almost unnaturally, bright colors. Is that why you chose the pencils, or was it the sketching ability of pencils, or was it both?
I used the pencils because I had been carrying them around, had a little bit of time, and thought it might be quick and easy. Like you, I thought there would be a burst of garish color when I added water to the light pencil coloring, but these pencils didn't do that.
DeleteThe single orange is a triumph! Frame it! I agree you could use a couple of shadows below the lemons in the top painting. I’m not crazy about this composition—I feel like the peacock feather should be on the table or somewhere else— but it’s beautifully painted and your colors are spot on.
ReplyDeleteI really like the work on the big one. Appreciate the technique and the colors, but I wouldn't know the bottom one was an orange unless you told me.
