Tryout sketches….

I’m trying out composition and values with these two sketches. They look pretty washed out here on the blog. I’m going to try them again with a little more intention.

I was working on this in class and now I like it so much I’m afraid to finish it because I might ruin it!

  1. I like the plethora coming out of the pitcher wild and free. Those shadows may be as dark as their shadow, but the shadow should have a different color. I like the way the cotton candy tree fits into that forest of green marshmallows.

  2. These are interesting compositions. It's very clear what your focal point is and I might go even further and move the supporting players even further out of frame to play with your stars (the explosion of blossoms and that great shadow. I know exactly what you mean about that last one. But I'd push on...your study was magnificent and there's no reason to think this one will be any less so!

  3. I think the flowers and stems have to go further down the neck of the vase. They just seem to stop at the rim.

  4. Here's the thing about being afraid to ruin something. Never be. If you have some idea in your head that you think just might work, give it a try, otherwise you will always wonder about how it would have worked. If the idea doesn't work you will have learned something. If it works you will have learned something and you will have an even better painting. If you stop because you are afraid you will have a painting that maybe could have been better and you will not have learned anything.
