By the sea….

This turned out not too badly. I’m trying to get that look of the weird sunlight that pops thru the clouds before the storm. Maybe it needs more sky, less beach to get that across.

Last round, Ken suggested I take his nose  off of her knees, but the separation definitely changes the mood imo. Maybe that and the dark troubled sky …definitely a friendlier vibe in the bottom one…and better weather. Not really in love with this pose. I tell you there is so much paint on these two…I really should just transfer from watercolor to gouache.

  1. Oh I loooove that crimson blanket. I also like the deep shadows on their backs and their poses in the first one. Shouldn't his shadow slant left to right like hers? I like his face better against the sand, and a very good job on the shadowing of his shirt. You know Homer often combined gouache with his watercolors as did many of the other watercolorists of his day.

  2. The colors on these are so rich. I think the shadows are particularly lovely and agree that maybe more sky would help show the upcoming storm. Even without, I like it. Separating your people in the second set really does change the mood. Or maybe it's just the ominous sky. At a glance, the sky looks like a rock cliff and they're tucked into a cove. That shadow across his shoulder on the middle painting is exquisite.

  3. I’m thinking colors I saw in class were much more vibrant than they appear here. This is a great series.

  4. The colors are fab. I wonder if you lowered the sky/sea in the first one. I would make it much more dramatic and loose some of the sand area. I think his head near her dark jeans is much more interesting compositionally. But I do like the sky/lake of painting one above it. hmmm.
