This is Jack Wallace, Chicago actor. The photo had him slightly smiling with a twinkle in his eye. Worked to retrieve that but not there yet. Rest him on the piano and see what will happen
I knew Jack Wallace! Joe worked with him several times at the Goodman. Truly a gentle giant, although the pic you’re working must be from later in his life, when he was not so giant. Youve really captured a soulful gaze, like he’s thinking about some action he regrets….all of these last portraits have had beautifully painted eyes…
I really like these monochrome portraits. You can get the twinkle by nicking out a highlight in the eye, but he still feels like he's thinking of something serious rather than on the verge of a smile. I like it as it is, though, so you can just title it "Lost in Thought" or "Reflections on a Life" or something.
This is a beautiful portrait painting, Greeta. You've really achieved a moodiness and deep introspective sense in the face. And the loose rendition of the jacket and shirt helps heighten the intensity of value and brushwork of the face. Very well done.

ReplyDeleteYes this was years after he moved to LA. Loved watching him on stage for years in north side productions. Noy many pics of a younger Jack on internet.

ReplyDeleteI worked on him and by giving him more wrinkles and taking your advice on eye nick he now looks more smiley.
