These are great, Greeta--as value studies and as a finished grouping. They feel like different eras, but all of them feel "aged" because of the sepia color. It's like a historical progression on a family wall. Also, do they all feel slightly sad or trepidatious? Or is it just me?
The first 2 have a slight smile which I didn’t quite get. The third is a young Georgia O’Keefe …did not get her likeness. They are all probably circa 1930’s. Teacher asks that we don ‘t do smiles + teeth.
The brushwork on these is very nice, but you really have to look at the large images to appreciate the nuance. That last portrait may not be Georgia, but it’s incredibly beautiful. Are these direct paintings or are you sketching first?
Against the direction of the teacher I have traced. He is a direct painter…draws on the WC paper using an easel, holding pencil loosely at top then paints with a large brush from a photo…a colored old fashioned glossy. I did set up an easel and am drawing images on cheap drawing paper but haven’t connected to a painting. Description of class said clothed figure. I didn’t realize it meant portraits.
