July 6, 2019

Happy Fourth of July! While some of us were out vacationing, camping or celebrating with grandchildren, our stalwarts were celebrating the Fourth with paint. Greeta finished her painting of her soccer boys (we are sure they are inspired by the US women's team!). The bold stripes and bright colors look very patriotic.

From there, Greeta begins a painting of girls having a frolic on the seashore. Look at the movement and be sure to notice the color swatches at the right, where Greeta lays out her palette. No wonder there is such a harmony among the colors.

Steve has finished his beach scene. Despite using 300 lb. paper (which seems to soak up the color), he's achieved a richness to his colors. Also, he's managed to distinguish his two subjects, when it would be all too easy to leave them the same.

Ken continues to work on his mosaic woman. She's based on a Julia Cameron photo, but there's been some speculation that she looks like Mary Magdalene. Come back next week to judge for yourself.

Alan has finished this painting in his Drinking Dogs series.  We love the focus on the dog and the spark of personality he exudes. He seems to be enjoying his drink and having a spirited philosophical conversation, doesn't he?

Moving to his beloved Yupo, Alan began this painting of plants at the edge of an expanse of water.

In a similar vein, Marva focuses on plant life. Here, she's zoomed in on a small group of tiger lilies and silhouetted them against the sky. It's a brilliant use of complementary colors.

More flowers! Isa is painting tulips. She's quite satisfied with her composition but still plans to put in a lot of work on leaves in the foreground.

Janet is doing one of our favorite exercises—the three-way fruit. Here we see an onion, dry on dry and wet on dry. Her wet-in-wet dissolved (which is quite typical of true wet-in-wet work).

Carolina is also doing exercises. In this case, she's color matching. We love the results, as well as her fluid brush strokes.

Many thanks to Greeta, our guest photographer, for these lovely photos. We'll be back next week. Meanwhile, you're invited to some special events. Get your pencils and calendars ready!
