January 25, 2025 — Elaine O.

I think I need to get more familiar with the dragonfruit. They are lovely, but I don't know if the inside is their best side. On the other hand, the stark black and white against the hot pink really gives it a pop, graphic quality that I tried to match in this painting.

  1. I just love all the sharp angles and edges playing against the roundness of the fruit. And the way the colors pop against the blue gray counter. The fruit itself could have more variation — highlights, etc.— to emphasize its roundness. Or maybe the colors just need to be deeper on the fruit to stand up to green napkin.

  2. Reminds me of those cubist paintings where one thing is atop the other so that they look a bit like collages. I like the broad shapes but I just can't love the white and black of the inside, breaking up the size of the seeds, and putting that white cutting board underneath it helps.

  3. Use 2 or 3 dragon fruit and forget about cutting it up. But leave the knife.

  4. Very cool. Is it just me (or maybe my computer), but all the pix looked much more brilliant in person than on the screen? Like the black was very dark, etc. Anyway, I luv your division of spaces and all the angles. It's such a dynamic composition and use of complimentary colors. We want more dragon fruit portraits!
