February 15, 2025 — Elaine O.

Another small still life. This time, I chose a familiar subject to revisit a support I haven't used in a while—aquabord. It's a masonite panel with a clay surface that accepts watercolor, although differently than paper or even Yupo. I'm happy enough with the result that the next step is to give it a coat of wax and prop it up somewhere—probably a kitchen. It seems kitchen-y, doesn't it?

  1. I really like it. Did you use anything to coat the surface before painting?

    1. No, it's supposed to be ready-to-go. The package claims it's an "amazing watercolor surface—uniquely absorbent, absolutely archival." So, if you can't trust the package advertising on the package, what then!?

  2. Well damn, I really like this one but I can't help but think, maybe too much orange. Maybe if that cloth was lighter, maybe if it had more yellow like the wall behind it. But maybe it's just me. Kind of bold to go deeply into orange and I love the blue (Navy?) of the table and how it lightens as it goes to the wall.

    1. I originally intended to add another differentiating layer to the oranges, but this surface doesn't take well to layering. So I stopped here and hoped they were just separate enough.

  3. A lovely study highlighting the value of using complementary colors. Very masterful how you made the orange sitting on the orange cloth pop out on its own when they are very nearly the same color!

  4. Really like this. And I have those bowls. Time to buy some fruit. And u don’t have to mat or frame. Did u get the masonite at Blick??

    1. Yes, no matting or framing, and it takes up very little space. Blick sells this. It's by Ampersand and they make Aquabord and Claybord. I bought a small pack of each to see the difference. As best I can tell, Aquabord is specifically for watercolor and Claybord is more mixed media. Claybord is very smooth and Aquabord is textured.
