Nice brushstrokes and form, maybe a pop of color in the background would add a little contrast…or maybe some branches in the background? As portraits, they look unfinished to me, but I think I’m responding to the background more than the birds. The birds are well painted.
These are so cute! I'm not sure that adding a background wouldn't take away from the bird. Maybe if they were a bit smaller on the page, they'd look more like a vignette and the blank background would be more fitting. As it is, though, I do see a background painted in, just a pale wash. Maybe if you added a swash of color--not like leaves or anything realistic, just color--that would set the bird off. I'm not sure. I just know that I like the birds and the lack of background doesn't bother me tremendously, so whatever you decide is good.
Yeah, that yellow bird really connects with the viewer, the way he/she is so puffed up and looking at you. The other one does seems out of focus to me. A splash of color might look good without referencing anything in particular, especially with the Goldfinch.

ReplyDeleteI like the first bird with his big yellow breast and knowing eye. The second guy looks, I dunno, fuzzy.
ReplyDeleteMaybe feathery.
