August 9, 2025 — Elaine O.

I realized I've been neglecting my sketchbook lately—especially since there's a lot going on that needs documenting. Lots of construction...and this time, it's mostly ours! So, after a particularly hectic week, I finished this spread.

11.5" x 16"

It's not fine art, just enough to roughly document the week for myself. Sadly, most of the work involves dirt, brick and concrete—hence, lots of grays and browns. The work around the neighborhood continues though, and next week promises to be more colorful.

  1. Oh Elaine, there are a rainbow of colors stemming from brown and grey, and I have to say that you have done well by them. Is that blue on the doors and the mailbox the same blue as is in your bathroom paintings?

I think any one of these could be a standalone masterpiece. I especially like the mailbox. We put up one like that in the bungalow on Homan Avenue when I was like five years old. The last year when I took my annual Trip to Gage Park it was still there.

    1. That mailbox has been on my folks' house as long as I can remember. Everyone must have had them back in the day! It's a textured brown now, but when I chipped off the old Dymo name tape, the finish beneath was a glossy black enamel. And that greenish medallion was some kind of bronze-ish metal that's patinaed over time. And no, these blue-greens are a mix of hookers green and ultramarine blue in differing strengths.

  2. Love the combo of pen and watercolors. The mailbox and porch portraits are little gems….

  3. I start out trying to do this, but I always have to make it into an actual painting. Cheers to you for the simplicity that I can’t seem to achieve.
