There are paintings and there are "learning opportunities." This is the latter, and it's been a good one. The reference was a pale flower in clear glass against a pale background. I missed some contrast, so I put in a deep dark background. That did not work, so I scrubbed it out to this, which is also not quite right. I do like the vase and stem, though.

The background pops that flower forward so well and the vase is nicely painted. I like the shadow in the vase and the line of the stem just adds so much. It’s a lovely composition although I feel it shouldn’t be, because the vase and the flower are about the same size, the background only comes halfway. It shouldn’t work, but it does!…maybe because it’s all painted so delicately — that unifies it.
ReplyDeleteI remember the photo as being more monocolor and overall gauzy. I think the petals of the flowers are outlined too strongly and should be fuzzier to merge with the background.
ReplyDeleteIt’s hard to paint glass but you’ve done a good job with that. Not crazy about the composition. Maybe because it’s so evenly divided. Like the mottled background.
ReplyDeleteIt's rather sweet, isn't It? The big, little flower, front and center stage. All pinks, blues and lavenders. Dream-like, yet fully focused. It must be a painting for a growing up little girl, don't you think?
