Inspired by Sara’s in-to-out paintings I tried to paint this interior of my cottage living room.
I’m not thrilled with it although everything is in the right place. I think that it lacks value. Greeta bought me a set of watercolor brush pens that I’ll use to update this painting. It’s 8 1/2 X 11 on cold press.
This is our bountiful heirloom tomato crop. It’s in my 5 X 5 sketchbook on hot press.
ooo, that tomato is amazing. It doesn't even need those books behind it. Your right about the interior painting. It needs a study of values to gather the objects together in places so that don't each stand out individually. Your eyes hop back and forth from all the browns isolated by the light colors. There's not an overall sense of composition.
ReplyDeleteLove the tomato - the richness of the colors and the fanciful stem just make it! The interior is sweetly painted but I agree you need some darker values. I would darken the walls and create a shaft of sunlight highlighting the rocking chair. You might have to do a wash over the other furniture as well.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree about that tomato--it's great, even without a background! I think you're right about the interior needing value adjustments, and also a focal point. It seems like now it's a collection of mid-range things floating in a field of light values. I like that comfy rocker as a focal point, so maybe a partial glaze would unify the background and separate the focal point. I like Sara's shaft of light suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI also love the tomato. Resembles one of those huge hunks of jewelry from the days of kings and queens. Nothing wrong with that.
