Sara’s gone Daffa-dilly....

Picked a lot of my daffodils to rescue them from the snow. I really like this pic I took of them.

And I really like these quick sketches I did.

These watercolors not so much. They don’t have the energy of the sketches. And I’m struggling between details and no details in the flowers. Not to mention creating dark yellows that aren’t muddy.
So today I did a value sketch for another painting. I like the overall composition but I’m still struggling between details and values...

Ps I can see Alan’s post as a preview but I can’t add a comment. Good to see you Alan & Greeta. Love the paintings, esp. flowers &  food paintings. How is it down there? Is everything closed but the  casinos?..

  1. Sara, these are wonderful! I have some photos, too, but I didn't start painting or sketching yet. You're right about getting values in these. Yellow has such a limited value range and anything you add seems to muddy the colors or look artificial. At least, for me. I'm sure you'll get it, though. You have such a way with color. And the photo and sketches are beautiful.

  2. omg, I thought at first the photo was your watercolor ptg! The fact that the bottom portion was in such heightened contrast was cool. Your drawings all look great. And the first watercolor is interesting in its shapes and painterly-ness. The second ptg. has a strength/ power in its abstract balancing. Way to go, girl.

  3. I too thought that the first image was a watercolor. Even now I wonder if it had that watercolor effect filter or was edited in some way. I like the first painting better. I guess I would go for details rather than values. I like it crisp. The background in the photo makes the image, the way it's hard edge geometrical shapes contrast with the flowers.

I guess that gray out the window is because of the Venetian blinds, but it gives the effect of a heavily overcast day, again a sharp contrast with the daffodils, both in color and in spirit.
