A couple of trees….

These are small, sketchbook size. Just seeing how much paint I can pile on them….the bottom one has a lot of watercolor pencil too. I like to dip the pencil point in water and then draw with it. You get a lot of intense color that way. I like the contrast in the bottom one and the building color in the top one, but the tree shadows are not quite there….as always. Just looking at my two double portraits this week, trying to decide if they’re done.

  1. That view is like an old friend. I like the way the branches on the top one seem lit up by the sun (as does the building). I like the texture and values in the bottom one. There seems to be a shadow across the bottom half of the painting. It's especially noticeable on the building and drapery. Is it in the painting or did it happen during photography? I really like the effect on the building.

  2. Top one is good. I have to work to justify the tree shadow and it may be correct. I have the same question that Elaine did. But, if it’s a photography issue, it reveals something interesting. I suspect that it is because the shadow continues onto the drape. But it’s cool outside. But then you’ve got the other ray of sunshine on the grass. So……I have to do a lot of mental gymnastics for this to make sense. But I still like it.

  3. The top one seems maybe too dreamy, none of those crisp hard lines that I like. The sky and tree at the top are nice, and the drapes (I think it's something throwing a shadow on the painting when you took it.) billow ok. But that building, I don't know, in all the paintings in this series, never gets the attention it deserves.
