September 28, 2013

So, Pat brought in a catalog from her ARC show today. She also brought in a catalog from another show that she called  the "most beautiful ever." Of course, we had to look—and she was probably right! It was a show called Kimono As Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota and it was truly incredible! He had a series of landscapes dyed and stitched onto 8' high kimono. They filled a room, scrolled through 4 seasons and were positively luminous.

They inspired us all—in terms of color and subject matter. Just scroll through and you'll see what we mean. You'll notice we are on a tree kick today, starting with Gary's amazing birches, Steve's tropical treescape, Alan's sun-drenched hickories and David's dancing trees (which are evocative of the portrait of Pat in her colorful art dress).  More wonderfully colored and exquisitely layered landscapes follow (Mark went deep and rich while Marva's new pallette continues to sparkle), leading up to richly colored portraits and drawings.

The surprise of the day? The fruit portraits belong to Sara, not Greeta. Sara (who is known for her mastery of trees) is now doing fruit! And Greeta, (master of the fruit portrait) was out with the flu. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Art medium of the day: It's still texture medium, but now David's on board. In his hands, it creates a look similar to a lovely, swirly marble. Unfortunately, we didn't get a photo, but we'll definitely be showing you more next week.

Intrigued by the reference to the catalog from Pat's show? Did you miss the opening on Friday? There's still time to see the show (in fact, you'll probably get a better view without the crowds). Here's the information below—and you'll recognize Pat's dress by the painting.
Pat's Art Exhibition. Visit ARC Gallery's 40th Anniversary Members Exhibition, featuring work by our very own Pat Otto. The show runs from Sept. 25 thru Oct.19 (click here for more information):
