A cormorant dries her wings, a Ginko tree spews leaves, and a ghost cormorant prepares for flight.

I like the contrast between the purplish certainty and the greenish uncertainty.

I don't know about those sky holes, but I think they work as a compositional element, floating along with the tiny yellow leaves as they rise daintily out from the sturdy trunk.

This is just the beginning,  I may try to have the cormorant be more of the water, but we shall see.

  1. Love that first one. The water is perfect. It moves but doesn't overpower--same for the bird. I like the addition of the sky holes for the color, but I think if they were bigger, it would give the eye a resting place and emphasize that beautiful bark on the tree trunk. I like the beginning of that third one too. Right now, it has the feel of squinting at blindingly bright sun on water. Carry on!

    1. I put them in in spaces of white where I didn't put any leaves after I had put in most of my yellow leaves. Do you plan yours before you put in any leaves and then just avoid that space when you are putting in the leaves? What do you do for when the leave abuts a skyhole to avoid a boundary line?

    2. I don't really plan them. I think I just leave spaces when I'm doing the leaves and add sky color later. I tend to paint the leaves in clumps so the holes form naturally. I think this is a question for Sara. She's done far more trees (and better) than I have.
