Inspiration can come from the damndest places. When my friend in Michigan came over to work on our cottage opened the hatchback of his SUV I was amazed by the pile of tools and cords. So…I took a photo of it and turned it into a painting on Yupo. I just liked the chaos of it. It’s 11 X 14 on Yupo
Returning to my sketchbook, I sketched a farm scene I had taken a photo of and washed it over with watercolor.
It’s 5 X 10 on hot press.
Bye the way, if you look at the gouache resist painting I posted last time on a bigger screen and zoom in you’ll get an idea of the tremendous texture of that technique.
The junk in the trunk painting is interesting. Chaos, yes--but held in place by the controlled complementary palette, the strong lines and the flat plane. And from chaotic to bucolic. Again, the restrained colors really contribute to the feel of the piece. I checked out the last gouache resist you did and you're right about the texture--even more than the simpler, one-step method. Again, very interesting!
ReplyDeleteInteresting composition on the first one. Since you are so close why not go full bore abstract?
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the vertical line in the middle. Seems like all the action is in the left side, those royal blue topped silos and that grey shadowed shed. Is that white gouache on the silo and squiggling line in the vegetation?
Would you have known what it was if I hadn’t told you? It’s a long long way from the initial observation to this painting. So….what’s your definition of abstract?
DeleteThe centerline is from the sketchbook. I like the ability to use 1, 2, or 3 sheets in case I want to do a more horizontal work.
I think it’s pretty balanced going from the front right to the rear left on the diagonal.
The white gel pen is one of my favorite tools for sketching. It kinda provides a counterpoint to the black squiggly lines and provides some nice depth… imo.
I like the swirling movements of the yellows and purples around the orange objects. It all hangs together pretty well.. reminds me of the Russian Constructivists.
ReplyDeleteThe farm scene is very serene with the blue and yellow palette. Never thought of using the white gel pen in sketches…
Your Yupo trunk painting works well compositionally and color-wise. Way to go. Showing how versatile you can go. The smaller sketchbook farm scene takes on a totally different vibe. Serene and "old fashioned" but with new newfangled art supplies (gel pens) to do the job. Way to go, again.
