Joel & Clementine

This won't be my last "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" painting - but I'm calling this one done :)

It's, of course, mostly gouache - BUT - has a tiny bit of red watercolor mixed with red gouache!!! Did you EVER think you'd see the day??

I swear I'm here for watercolor, BUT ALSO, if you're into movies so good you'll never stop thinking about them - check this one out :)

Darkened Pete since you last saw him.  Wish he had a more crazy expression.  Also the painting as it is looks like, well like so what?  It doesn't have, I dunno, any oomph,

Elaine O.—February 25, 2023

Finished! I like the composition and the quality of light coming through the leaves but I might chose a different color and value for the statue to emphasize the backlighting even more. Anyway, I don't think I'm quite finished with the subject yet.

5 Minute Warmups — February 25, 2023

There's a slight twist today—the reference photos are on the right and the 5-minute paintings on the left. We hope you won't be unduly confused by this. :)  Bryan's painting is a little jewel of movement and color. But look closely and you'll see it's really a worker eviscerating a fish—talk about confusion.

In contrast, Elaine's reference is neither colorful nor action-packed. So much blue—but at least she didn't get any livestock this week!

Ken defined his landscape of rolling hills, blue skies and telephone towers with colored shapes and calligraphic line.

And Allison's reference was also about travel, but she used line, with colored shapes as accents.

Alan heading south

Here’s a couple of trading cards. The one with the tree branches and berries in Old Town would have been easier if I had put in a wash for the sky first. Quick lesson!  The radishes were just fun.

I finished this watercolor on 140 Arches of a little Mississippi house that I regularly walk by. I liked the softness and the watercolory feel of this. I’m about to do some more.

And now, in honor of Ken, I’m developing another onion painting on Yupo. I like the start. I will spend more time on some of the onions that need more work to finish. Each onion is kind of an art piece on its own. It’s hard to believe that yesterday this was a plain piece of white paper. Art!

No class for me….

It’s a family weekend for me, celebrating Joe’s birthday with everyone at our house, so no time for art. These are my two bowls of shallots. The first is the one I posted last week,  after takin the advice to add more color. The second one I’m still working on, trying to avoid local color to see what happens. See you all next week if there’s a class still….

Ss: Vines & Gazebo fr Window 02.22.23

The tree covered with Vines and the Gazebo #4 were the inspiration from my boardwalk window. The boardwalk rooms we rented are the nearest to the water, no need for shuttle service to wet our feet. The viney tree was a challenge to paint, it was aged like an old lady with loose strands of hair with her extremities twisted around each other. The Gazebo in front of the window were filled and emptied of tourists from time to time. I wanted to paint it during sunset but all the hours at the end of our days were occupied with family get togethers. Perhaps I could paint this scenery in another frame in time!

Messing around…

I’m done with this. I messed around with her hair a little to take away volume, but she’s too small and overworked to do much else.

I did a quick (well not so quick) trading card portrait, inspired by Alan’s attempts.

This is a bowl of shallots done directly from life right on my kitchen counter. I like the energy but not crazy about the color mixing…it seems that everything I learned about color mixing from Greeta’s book has gone right out of my head…

Gave Pete a little texture and now I have to work on that saucer and cat tree he is sitting on so it doesn't look like he is waiting for a haircut.  Will have to work on that expression too.

Atlanta Weekend

The friends we (Bryan and Allison) visited in Atlanta this past weekend had some watercolor supplies and magazines in their house - so we did a 5-minute challenge with them!

I (Allison) painted this purple fashion model - mixing a purple (quickly at least!) was tough :(

Bryan got a lot done in his 5-minutes, nice colors and shapes!

Our friend katie worked on a pretty rose <3

And our friend Adam flipped to an image of Serena and Venus...

Ever the perfectionist - he didn't stop after 5-minutes - and it turned out SO good!

To Twig Or Not To Twig

The caryatids remain twigless. Need to study Elaine Truver’s leafless trees.  That little creature on the trading card is not a bunny….it’s a roe deer. I framed the 5 min warmup.

Alan various

First I did two trading cards of two of my grandkids. I discovered that it is very difficult to do portraits on a very small scale. If you’re off a 1/16 of an inch on some features it doesn’t look like who you are trying to capture. It’s still fun though but I’ll use other subjects in the future.

This is Emmet on regular 140.

It looks more like him.

This is a Yupo composition of the two boys in my dungeon-like basement studio playing Xbox. I had the same problem with small features but I liked the composition and the energy

Elaine O. — February 18, 2023

One more glaze to adjust values, a few added details like telephone lines, and it's morning in the alley.

10" x 13"

From there, I returned to my panorama paper for this painting of a statue in the Boston MFA. It's slow going, detailed and meditative, but I want it to convey my impression of the gallery rather than being painstakingly realistic. We'll see if I can achieve that!

5 Minute Warmups — February 18, 2023

You know the drill — we have 5 minutes to paint a hitherto unseen reference photo. The purpose? To get us loosened up, warmed up and ready to paint. Ken painted portraits...

... as did Sara, sort of. Hers is all about the shapes and atmosphere, though.

Greeta painted a painting, choosing to concentrate on the mood and impressionistic style.

Elaine's reference was deceptively simple (it's a sidetable, by the way) and relied on color and contrast.

One other benefit is the fun we have looking at the results and complaining when the 5-minute buzzer goes off.

SS: Samal at Sunset 02.15.23

Samal is an Island Resort in Southern Ph surrounded by warm tropical seas & blessed with white sands. The Island is a statement of contradiction. Tourists pay top rate to enjoy its villas and rooms kissed by the sea while local residents endure strict rationing of water supply. Also, the Island is a producer of  one of the best pearl farms in the country. The pearl products, however. are not available locally in the Island. A major disappointment for this writer! Back to visual arts: The painting was done in plein air at the end of a long day which started with after midnight van ride from my hometown to Manila Airport to catch an early 2 hour flight to a major Southern Ph city. We took a 15 minute ferry ride, van included, to the Samal Island garden resort. We visited my cousin's house for seafood lunch & helped organize our family reunion this coming Saturday After we checked in at late afternoon at the Villa Amparo, I painted one of  the extended dining mini piers, during a strong breeze & with limited painting supply. I missed my Watercolor Rinsing Well!

Moving on….

This guy is probably done, although that pillowon the right could go down a notch in value…

After Greeta said she was going to paint the MSI cartiyds (sp?) I dug out this pic of my mom in front of them and did a quick sketch.  Y shadows are way too dark but it was kind of fun looking for different shades of gray, etc for the building and figuring out how to make the ladies stand out with few details.

Heavy yupo trading card done with acrylic markers. They do not wash off, but they’re hard to blend.

N O T I C E

Michael’s Sale:  Belmont Frame Sale. Buy One Get TWO until next Saturday.

I have (3) 11 x 14 for under $20 and I just noticed…….they have mats!!!

Elaine O. — February 11, 2023

Since this was just a study, I don't feel too precious about it. That's why I didn't hesitate to add a last minute dark glaze over the houses to add contrast between the sleeping houses and the sun-kissed tree tops. It also unified them into a cohesive group and shifted the focus to the light instead of the houses.

It could have been a total disaster, but I like it! And now, only one more session and I'll be calling this complete.

So Long General Grant

Not sorry so see him and the horse ride off into the sunset  I included a pic of that little room at the Ten Cat in case anyone wants to paint it
