May 3, 2025 — Elaine O.

I've finished and waxed this little portrait on Aquaboard and I'm happy with it. For some reason, I'm especially fond of the shirt. It's a particular favorite of the subject and I think I've done it justice.

6" x 6"

Because I haven't been able to find decent transfer paper lately, I've had to resort to actually drawing. Imagine! I did a direct watercolor and a pencil sketch of an old B&W snapshot. I love the photo—there's something quintessential about her stance and the way she holds her pocketbook. Now to figure out the background and do some color studies.

  1. Both the direct painting and the sketch are well done, especially the pencil sketch. The face is much more expressiven the sketch.

  2. Girl so lively. I love the shirt too. Composition excellent like she’ll move out of the pic at any moment. I’ve seen b&w photos of my Grandma in that pose. Corsage tells us it’s a celebration.

  3. Seems to me I have seen this girl before and she had a very sly smile. I miss that. You shouldn't put people in your paintings unless they look like they are up to no damn good. Except for Gramma of course, who is always welcome. I like the drawing a lot. Such detail. I liked the other people in the photo. If they are not going to make it into Gramma's painting I think they should get their own paintings.

  4. That you call it a “pocketbook” says something about you. The girl is perfect!

  5. The aquaboard painting looks great, composition and colors too. (Can't wait to see the oil rendition!) And I'm sure grandma never looked better. Colors used for her are perfect for the subject and pencil sketch is so expressive.
